FINLAND. Social democratic politician Abdirahim Hussein have been caught lying about being the victim of a rasist attack.

In early November Hussein claimed that he had suffered a racist attack when he was driving a woman in his taxi. The customer had told him to go back to Somalia and defend his country so Hussein kicked her out of the car in the middle of the highway. He claimed that he told her that he didn’t want the money of a racist.

A week later he changed his story claiming that he dropped of the woman at the bus shop. After that he wrote a blog post giving more information about his concersation with her. She had asked about his background and why he came to Finland. In his next version of the event he had “a man behaving in a racist manner” in his taxi, but didn’t remove him. His initial tweet had been written in anger to start a discussion about how taxi drivers are treated.

When the taxi company, Taksi Helsinki, looked into the matter they found that Husseins story wasn’t true. Nobody had been left on the side of the road. Jari Kantonen is the owner of the company and has said that nothing like this has ever happened before. Hussein has since tweeted:

I apologise for my actions and for lying. As a decision-maker it is my duty to be honest. I depend on my voters’ trust and I have now broken that trust. I shall do everything I can to restore trust in my actions.

A committee at the company will evaluate Hussein and decide what action to take. It might become nothing more than a reprimand, but it might also lead to his termination. He has already been excluded from the Council in Helsinki until June 2020.

Also, the medias attention have unearthed that Hussein has been convicted of fraud no less than three times since the year 2000.

There must be a limit to how much a politician is allowed to lie. Even a social democratic one.
