TURKEY. Two unidentified individuals targeted a 19-year-old man for wearing a cross necklace in Gebze.
The young man was on his way to church and when he was approached by two persons. They had noticed his cross necklace and pulled it off the chain asking if he knew what he was wearing. They then continued to slap him when the he affirmed his Christian faith. The young man didn’t file a police report.
Hate speech and attacks are increasingly a common occurrence in Turkey. Even though the country is the “home” of most of the New Testament Christians are today less than 0.2% of the population. The reason is the persecution during the Ottoman-era. Nowadays Turkey defines itself as secular, but the truth is that secularism and Islamism are both reasons for oppressing Christians.
