ISIS Gains Control in Africa

AFRICA. Terrorist groups in the sub-Saharan Sahel region of Africa have reaffirmed their commitment to ISIS in a video released on Saturday last week.

Several groups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria have all given their allegiance to ISIS. The groups are, among others, two Boko Haram factions, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM). This may mean that the groups are attempting to gain new followers and rebuild ISIS’ reputation and power even though they themselves have been devestating their countries for years.

As ISIS has lost power over the past few years in the Middle East many of the groups have started to gain power in Africa. Boko Haram lost much of their power in 2015 have regained much of that in the past year. There have also been a lot of growth for terrorist groups in new countries like Burkina Faso and more than 40 Christians have been killed in the past two months which is a massive increase.
