Persecutions of Christians – week 38

42 persons, mainly women returning to their farms, were hacked to death with machetes by Islamist rebels during 4-5 September. This happened in the Bria region in the Central African Republic where the majority is Christian. Other things that happens regularly is armed robberies, kidnappings and other type of attacks against civilians.

Christian citizens is one of Al-Shabaabs main targets in Kenya and on September 14 seven terrorists stopped a bus. The passangers that they believed to be Christian were forced to say the Islamic Shahada which is the statement of faith. Two of them couldn’t say it and turned out to be Christians. They were tied and shot by the side of the road.

Two Christian boys, 9 and 10-years old, were killed by Fulani Milita in Nigeria while out caring for a herd of cows. A third child was able to escape. This happened on 14 September.

The remains of the Nigerian village

Fulani Militia attacked five Christian villages in Nigeria during 13 to 16 September. 27 people lost their lives, many of them by drowning as they tried to escape via a river. More than 45 people were injured. Ten people are still missing. The houses were looted and burned and their cattle stolen.

An Italian missionary priest, Fr. Pierluigi Maccalli, were kidnapped in Niger in the evening of 17 September. The kidnappers haven’t made any claims and it’s believed that they may be Fulani Militia. Muslim leaders in Niger demand that they release the priest.

More than 30 Christian graves were vandalized in Algeria. They were ransacked and tombstones were destroyed. Investigators believe that the motive is Islamistic. Algerian authorities harassement of the church has increased as a way to isolate the Christian community.

I wrote last week about a Christian man in Pakistan who had been attacked with acid. He has passed away. His father say:

My son was targeted for his Christian faith. I don’t think we, the Christians, are safe in Pakistan. However, it is our country and we love it with our soul and spirit. We won’t seek refuge.

An Indian pastor were attacked by Hindu radicals in his village who wanted him to stop preaching. If he continue they said that they will kill him. He suffered severe head and spinal injuries. The Hindus claim that he lures people with money to approach Christianity. They have also vandalized the church.

Nepal have added a clause to the law that forbid people to convert from Hinduism to other religions. It’s also illegal to have a conversation about religion and it can give up to 5 years of prison with high fines. Nepal’s Christian minority fears that the law will be used in the same way as they are in India.

In your hands, O Lord,

we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters.

In this life you embraced them with your tender love;

deliver them now from every evil

and bid them eternal rest.

The old order has passed away:

welcome them into paradise,

where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain,

but fullness of peace and joy

with your Son and the Holy Spirit

forever and ever.
