VATICAN. Pope Francis held a speech to a group from Italy’s Family Association in Rome this June and said something that rang true for me. Very true.
I say this with pain. In the last century the whole world was scandalized about what the Nazis did to purify the race. Today we do the same, but now with white gloves.
When the Nazi’s killed mentally or physically disabled children and adults and also people with mental illness they targeted people who were already alive. Killing them. Our society prevent many of these persons from getting born by killing them. We’re practicing the same eugenics that the Nazi’s did, but in a more discreet way. One might even say that our society are more successful on this point than they were.
Today the focus is some sort of misguided empathy. That it would be best for that child if he wasn’t subjected to suffering. And perhaps behind all of this there is a parent who is overwhelmed by the information that she’s just gotten. Someone who has no experience of people with handicaps and that’s scared. So when the well-meaning nurses and doctors suggest abortion as the very first alternative it seems like the most practical and sensible thing.
